With wheels on the ground, there's maybe 1/16". With either side of the front end jacked up and wheel hanging freely, there is axial movement 1/16 - 1/8" in the shaft relative to the joints. Maybe the bushing in the trans is worn? I assume this would have been replaced during the rebuild. Doesn't seem right, but posts online say it's normal. Tires that had been on the rear have excellent tread and are now on the front and had been replaced earlier this year.ĭriver side axle shaft where it goes into the trans can move up and down quite a bit (1/16" or more). No effect rotating tires and even using the spare. No noticeable choppiness to the tread, just inside wear. Really don't think it's tire noise though (Michelin). Tire store owner drove it with me and claims it's definitely a bearing. Wanted to do it before taking back to Aamco. Drives better as far as steering straight, but this wasn't the problem. Also discovered that neither hub was replaced where I was told the first time it needed to). I'm also told to replace the brakes (I did, and it was a waste of money. Says he'll tell the boss to buy a device for measuring vibration to pinpoint where the noise is coming from. Take back for the mechanic to experience noise first hand. No change in pitch turning left or right as if typical wheel bearing issue. Above 60mph the wuh, wuh, wuh changes to just a continuous loud hum. At 50 I've counted ~148 times it goes wuh, wuh, wuh, or whatever. Doesn't matter what gear, engine RPM, it's there and very noticeable above 25. Not long after (days) wife complains of serious noise issue. Not terrible, but definitely there, and wife needed the car. Test drove with mechanic and notice humming sound. They replace both axle shafts and RH wheel bearing. Wife later complains about front end noise. Mechanic proceeds to install bearing backwards, and dash light for ABS comes on during test drive. Manager informs me that the hub also needs to be replaced. Take it back to Aamco to replace the LH bearing as wife is worried about it. Did have popping/creaking noises (LH CV joint) though for quite some time prior to the trans rebuild.įast forward to November 2021. Was told at the time we had a bad wheel bearing (not sure which). Transmission gave out (slipping in/out of gear) at 85,000 miles in March 2021.
